Definition

Tracheobronchomalacia and hyperdynamic airway collapse refer to the loss of the structural integrity of the airway walls. It may or may not result in symptoms of dyspnea on exertion, a nonproductive cough, or wheezing.

Introduction

Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) and hyperdynamic airway collapse (HDAC) can be debilitating diseases associated with decreased functional capacities and a poor quality of life. The diverse etiologies associated with TBM and HDAC can obscure and delay an accurate diagnosis for years (Carden et al. 2005). A thorough medical history is important to understanding the possible etiologies as well as guiding the diagnostic testing.
