Definition
The term eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) is used to describe a histopathologic pattern of eosinophilic infiltration of the interstitium and alveolar spaces. Diseases with this underlying histopathologic pattern have been further categorized based on primary or secondary etiologies. Secondary EP may result from a variety of disease processes including drug toxicity, parasitic and fungal infections, and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis/mycosis (ABPA/ABPM). Primary EP conditions are further categorized based on the presence of extrapulmonary manifestations (including Churg-Strauss syndrome and idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome) or based on lung-limited disease (including idiopathic chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (ICEP) and idiopathic acute eosinophilic pneumonia (IAEP)) (Table 1) (Cordier 2003).
