Abstract
A 77-year-old man presented to an outpatient surgical center for corneal transplant, cataract extraction, and intraocular lens implant of the left eye, under regional block plus monitored anesthesia care (MAC). Intravenous sedation was being titrated, at which time the anesthesia provider recognized the surgeon was starting the procedure on the wrong eye. This case reviews sedation levels and definitions, monitored anesthesia care, definitions of nonphysicians providing sedation, and requirements for a lawsuit to be judged in favor of the patient.
