Definition

The Pain Recovery Inventory of Concerns and Expectations (PRICE) is a 46-item self-report questionnaire that was developed to identify individuals with acute low back pain (LBP) who are at greatest risk of transitioning to chronic back pain and disability and to match them to one of three early intervention strategies (Shaw et al. 2013). The items were selected from existing research measures and chosen based on their ability to discriminate patient subgroups and to predict 3-month outcomes of pain, function, and return to work (Shaw et al. 2007). The questionnaire includes items relating to pain and pain beliefs, function, psychological well-being, recovery expectations, and workplace support. The PRICE was designed for working adults with acute LBP and for administration within the first 2 weeks of pain onset. For each item, respondents are asked to indicate their level of agreement, their level of difficulty, or the frequency of their feelings and behaviors.
