Abstract
Care for cancer patients from diverse cultural groups requires cultural competence, including cultural awareness, knowledge, and specific skills. Israel, a multicultural state with many subgroups of Jews and Arabs, displays diverse degrees of religiosity and variety along the continuum from traditional to Western lifestyle. This chapter draws on the very few existing studies of multicultural aspects of care for cancer patients in Israel. It focuses mainly on two specific and culturally distinct groups in Israel: Arabs and ultra-orthodox Jews. It describes perceptions of cancer in the familial and societal context and elaborates aspects of psychosocial interventions in the multicultural context. It concludes with thoughts on how to use cultural knowledge to promote the care of cancer patients.
