Abstract
The previous chapter concluded with an indictment of medical technology as one of the primary factors responsible for health care cost inflation. Literature was briefly cited to show that technological improvements in the nature and quality of health care led to increases in the costs of care. It was also briefly mentioned that the existence of health insurance encouraged the development and diffusion of cost-increasing medical technologies. These findings, and the acknowledgment in Chap. 2 of the important role that technology plays in health care delivery and financing, suggest that we devote a chapter of the book to examine the influences of medical technologies on the health care delivery and policy-making processes. We begin by defining and giving some examples of medical technology, and by tracing the evolution of medical technology in the United States.
