Abstract

Application of superconductivity phenomenon is being studied in various areas including energy, transportation, information, and medical services. In 1980s, it has been gaining momentum and spreading far and wide (Table 1). The prime moving force of such growth of applied superconductivity is the development of superconducting wires. Very reliable wires have been developed through accumulation of many techniques. At present, multifilamentary Nb-Ti alloy wires are extensively in use for various applications, and Nb3Sn and V3Ga compounds have also been made successfully into multifilamentary wires. Practical application of other compounds having even higher properties is being investigated by the use of new manufacturing techniques.
