Radio Emission and Optical Properties of Early Type Galaxies

  • Conference paper
The World of Galaxies

Abstract

Statistical analyses of optical parameters of radio galaxies may help us to understand the reason why an ordinary early type galaxy becomes a powerful radio emitter. Some important correlations have already been studied by several authors. For example, it is well known that the probability of radio emission is strongly correlated with the optical luminosity of the galaxy (e.g. Colla et al. 1975, Auriemma et al. 1977). Strong radio emission seems also to be more common in ellipticals than in S0 or Sa galaxies (e.g. Heeschen 1970, Dressel 1981, Corday 1986).
