Abstract

A melanocyte may give rise to a melanocytoma, a benign, usually black tumor most commonly seen on or adjacent to the optic nerve. Histopathologically, the melanocytoma is a magnocellular nevus. Melanocytomas are probably present at birth, although the diagnosis is usually made later in life. They usually appear unilaterally, and there is no preferential predilection for women over men. Darkly pigmented individuals are more likely to be affected.
