Abstract
An estimated 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer in the United States were anticipated in 1991 and 13,000 deaths due to this lesion. It is estimated that about 1 of every 70 newborn girls (1.4%) will develop ovarian cancer during their lifetime. This neoplasm accounts for 4% of all cancers among women and 27% of the cancers of the female reproductive system. Although ovarian cancer ranks second in incidence among gynecologic cancers, it causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
