Abstract

Stem protostelic, the stele anchor-shaped or cylindrical, not indurated, bearing many, long, firm, usually dichotomously branched roots; leaves borne in a close spiral or distichous, more or less acicular, with 1 vein; sporangia very large, single, sessile, thin-walled, and more or less embedded near the base of the leaf on the adaxial side; heterosporous, spores without chlorophyll. Megagametophytes and microgametophytes minute, partly protruding from the megaspore or microspore wall.
