Low-Field Magnetic Properties of DyVO4 and TbPO4

  • Chapter
Low Temperature Physics-LT 13

Abstract

DyVO4 and TbPO4 belong to the family of rare earth phosphates, arsenates, and vanadates, which have the tetragonal zircon structure. In particular, DyVO4 has attracted great interest1–15 since it shows a cooperative Jahn—Teller distortion to orthorhombic symmetry at T D ≅ 14°K accompanied by a change in magnetic properties. In the paramagnetic region below T D the principal g values become very anisotropic, with g a = 19 ≫ gb, gc, where the c axis corresponds to the tetragonal axis. An interesting feature is that the g a axis can be rotated by application of a magnetic field. At T N ≅ 3°K, DyVO4 becomes antiferromagnetic. Due to the large g-value anisotropy, the state can be regarded as an Ising antiferromagnet.
