Abstract

Deuterated methane CD4 freezes at 89.6°K and in the solid phase undergoes two phase transitions characterized by lambda-type heat capacity maxima at 22.2 and 27.1°K.1At low pressures solid CH4 exhibits clearly only one phase transition at 20.48°K.1 The object of our study was to determine the acoustical properties associated with the phase transitions in CD4 and to compare the results with prior work2 on CH4. We have measured velocity and attenuation of 4- and 12-MHz longitudinal sound in CD4 at temperatures between 2 and 77°K and have observed discontinuities in the slope of the velocity vs. temperature curve and attenuation peaks in the vicinity of the transition temperatures.
