Abstract
Although intrinsic motivation has begun to gain recognition as an important aspect of human motivation, and theories of intrinsic motivation have been developed, very little work has been done to incorporate the concept of intrinsic motivation into a broader theory of motivation. This chapter will use a cognitive perspective to present the basic outline of a general theory of motivation which incorporates intrinsic motivation.
