Tricyclic and Monoamine-Oxidase-Inhibitor Antidepressants: Clinical Use

  • Chapter
Handbook of Psychopharmacology

Abstract

Depression, despite the availability of a wide range of biological, pharmacological and psychological therapies, remains a major health problem. The social and economic cost, together with the immense personal and family suffering caused by this recurrent illness have stimulated a number of comparative studies to identify effective treatments. Although progress has undoubtedly been made and hundreds of reports on controlled and uncontrolled clinical trials, and review articles and chapters have been written on this subject (Cole, 1964; Cole and Davis, 1975), information regarding efficacy and choice of antidepressant drug management is surprisingly scant.
