Abstract

I suppose my career first began to turn toward neuroendocrinology on December 7, 1941. At that time, I was majoring in government at Harvard College and planning to enter public administration. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, I was drafted and initially assigned to the infantry. However, the Army subsequently decided to send me back to school, first for pre-engineering studies and then for a premedical and medical education. The change from public administration to medical science is one I have never regretted, but it is one that occurred because of world events rather than personal planning.
