Abstract

The question of whether alcoholics can successfully engage in non-problem drinking has been a subject of heated debate, with arguments more often based on personal beliefs than on scientific evidence. Published reports of successful drinking outcomes by alcoholics have been continually derogated; in addition, the publication of such research has been labeled as irresponsible, perhaps unethical, and serving no useful purpose. Are these reactions reasonable and prudent? Such a determination can be made only by examining the existing evidence.
