Abstract

As discussed in the preceding chapters, the passage of the nerve impulse along the axon is influenced by the nature of the ionic environment and the previous history of the axon. This can also be true for several other parts of the nerve cell, such as the plasma and dendritic membranes and the axon hillock. But, it is the synapse that is probably the most plastic and variably responsive part of the neuron, so much so that the proposal by Tanzi in 1893 that learning is a synaptic event still remains an acceptible basis for hypotheses of neural plasticity.
