Abstract
Very simply, amino acids are the building blocks from which proteins are constructed. For this reason, the synthesis, metabolism, and degradation of amino acids contribute in a very essential way to protein functioning. The products of their breakdown may also be involved in the generation of energy-rich compounds in the body, and a number of amino acids have been identified as likely CNS neurotransmitters.
