Abstract
Prostaglandins (PGs) are a group of lipidic compounds derived from C-20 polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly arachidonic acid (AA). Biosynthesis of these compounds is an ubiquitous process, occuring in the cell membrane under various stimuli; synthesis Is intermittant, short lasting and self limited and is followed by an immediate intra and/or extra-cellular release; PGs exert local action on cells by interaction with specific receptors and are then subjected to a spontaneous or enzymatic intra-cellular catabolism. As a consequence, these substances are local mediators rather than classical hormones or transmitters and, with the possible exception of prostacylcin (PG12), there is no circulating PGs.
