Abstract

Although not included in estimates of the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effects (see Chapter 6), increases in spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and perinatal death have been linked to in utero alcohol exposure. The nature of this link, however, can be debated. While in utero alcohol exposure may be directly responsible for these effects, it is also conceivable that it is the “alcoholic” rather than the alcohol that is accountable. In other words, it is possible that those physiological factors that predispose a woman to become an alcoholic, and that precede her doing so, may also render her more prone to adverse pregnancy outcomes.
