Abstract
The streptococci are among the most frequent bacterial pathogens to cause infection in humans. This is an interesting group of bacteria since some, especially members of the group A and B β-hemolytic streptococci, are considered primary pathogens, whereas others, such as the enterococci, are considered secondary pathogens, and still others are considered not to be pathogens at all. The streptococci are responsible for a wide variety of infections, including erysipelas, pyoderma, cellulitis, lymphangitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis, endocarditis, cystitis, and puerperal sepsis.
