Abstract
For the last decade or so, the pathways of cellular and humoral immunity represented by thymus-derived T lymphocytes and bursa or bursa-equivalent B cells have been a major area of emphasis in immunology. However, it is increasingly apparent that the true situation is considerably more complex than can be represented by a simple two-compartment model. During the last few years, immunologic mechanisms in health and disease have received extraordinary attention from a broad cross section of basic scientists and clinicians. It is now possible to discern the beginnings of a process of translation of the basic phenomena observed into maneuvers of practical clinical value. In light of this, and the rapidity of recent advances, this chapter focuses on recent progress in understanding of basic mechanisms with reference to selected disorders and particularly the recently-described acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
