Infant Crying

Abstract

The 15 essays of this volume present a comprehensive review of current knowledge about the neonatal human cry, its evolutionary origins, diagnostic implications, and effects on the social partner. They also review the technical and theoretical limitations on current objective methods for analyzing cry vocalizations. There is considerable overlap of themes across chapters starting from different theoretical orientations, and there are extensive cross-references to the same body of empirical findings. These convey a sense of closure on the topic that suggests either that most of the essential clinical and theoretical issues have been adequately investigated, or else that a fresh look and new theoretical perspectives are needed if the field is to progress. In these concluding remarks, it may, therefore, be useful to review the primary focus of past research, the major gaps in our current knowledge, and possible directions of future investigations.
