Molecular Genetics of Tyrosine Hydroxylase

  • Chapter
Role of RNA and DNA in Brain Function

Abstract

The isolation of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) cDNA clones has allowed the determination of the entire amino acid sequence of this previously uncharacterized protein. Amino acid sequence comparison with phenyl-alanine hydroxylase indicates that these enzymes share a high degree of homology. The human TH gene maps to the short arm of chromosome 11. The changes in TH mRNA and enzyme after reserpine injection have been analyzed. Their possible significance as to the mechanism of TH induction is discussed. Finally, new developments have concerned the detection of TH mRNA in tissue sections and the analysis of the TH nuclear gene.
