Chemical Modification of Wood: Reaction with Thioacetic Acid and its Effect on Physical and Mechanical Properties and Biological Resistance

  • Chapter
Renewable-Resource Materials

Abstract

Wood is a three-dimensional biopolymer complex composite made up of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Being of organic origin it is readily degraded by a variety of micro-organisms (wood rotting fungi, soft rot),insects, termites and marine borers attacking wood for food or shelter and other agencies such as fire, UV light, etc. Because of the hygroscopic nature of the wood components wood adsorbs/desorbs moisture with changing relative humidity of the atmosphere. Changing moisture conditions cause alternate swelling and shrinkage resulting in physical degrade leading to mechanical failure. High moisture contents are also conducive to higher and easier degrade by biological agencies. Numerous types of treatments have, therefore, been developed to improve its dimensional stability, mechanical strength, fire endurance and durability against micro-organisms.
