Effect of Pores on Microstructure Development

  • Chapter
Ceramic Microstructures ’86

Part of the book series: Materials Science Research ((MSR,volume 21))

Abstract

The progress that has been made over the last decade in the understanding and control of microstructure development in porous ceramic systems has been briefly reviewed. Significant advances have been made through the development and use of simultaneous models of densification and grain growth. Microstructural maps have emerged as an effective means for displaying the effects of pore distribution and additives on microstructure development. The optimum conditions for densifying systems containing a mixture of small and large pores have been analyzed and this has lead to the development of a new type of ceramic processing map.
