Abstract

“How can there be a single cause of anything so complex as an arbitrar ily defined collection of behaviour characteristics? We are not so naive as to believe any longer that any historical act, a war or a revolution, for example, has a single cause…When the Zen master says the ‘self is like the sound of one hand clapping,’ he means that it is as impossible to conceive of the self without the environment as it is to conceive of the sound of one hand clapping without the other hand.” (Dumont, 1968:27,39)
