Mixed Micelles of Dodecyltrimethylammonium Bromide with Sodium Dodecylsulfate Studied by ESR of Nitroxide Probes

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

Micellar solutions of pure ( sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)) and mixed surfactants, in various molar ratios, were studied by ESR of nitroxide spin probes* Two spin probes were used: i) a positively charged spin probe ( 4-trimethylammonium-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine- -1-oxy iodide, TM-TEMPAMINE+ ) to obtain information on micelles with a net negative surface charge, i.e. pure SDS and SDS-rich micelles; and ii) a negatively charged spin probe ( 2,2,5,5- -tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-l-oxy-3-carboxylic acid, sodium salt, TPOCA- ) to obtain information on micelles bearing a positive net charge, i.e. pure DTAB and DTAB-rich micelles. The ESR parameters analyzed were the nitrogen hyperfine coupling constant, <AN> , and the correlation time for the motion, T. The localization of the probes may be inferred from an analysis of the <AN> values. The correlation times allow investigation of the degree of immobilization of the probes on the surface of the micelles. The results obtained are in agreement with a large increase in immobilization of the TM-TEMPAMINE+ probe from the pure micelles to mixed ones. In particular the progressive “neutralization” of the micellar surface seems to produce a gradual viscosity increase of Stern’s layer and also of the diffuse layer.
