Addison’s Disease

The Adrenal Gland

Part of the book series: Clinical Surveys in Endocrinology ((CSED,volume 2))

Abstract

In 1855 Thomas Addison of Guy’s Hospital, London, published a monograph entitled “On the Constitutional and Local Effects of Disease of the Suprarenal Capsules.”1 This 39-page monograph, regarded by medical historians as one of the classics of medical literature, contained the first perfect description of an endocrine disease. In painstaking detail, Addison described the clinical features of the disease that now bears his name and speculated on the pathogenesis of this uniformly fatal disorder that had no cure. The events that preceded and followed the publication of Addison’s monograph make interesting reading and have all the markings of grand drama. It is noteworthy that the last decade of his life was punctuated by the excitement of his discovery of a new disease, the doubts and controversies generated by his peers, the misjudgments of the publishing hierarchy, and, above all, the tragedy that led to his untimely death within 5 years following the publication of his now celebrated, (but then ignored) monograph. Indeed, as for many geniuses, fame came to Addison, but posthumously.
