Increases in Potassium Conductance

Common Mechanisms of Opiate Action in Neurons of the Central Nervous System

  • Chapter
Neurotransmitters and Cortical Function

Abstract

In the past several years, many advances, most notably the discovery of opioid peptides and the widespread use of in vitro brain slice techniques, have accelerated the study of opiate action in the CNS. Since much of the work on the physiological actions of opiates has been done in the hippocampus and in the locus coeruleus (LC), this paper will concentrate on these areas, using other studies when useful for illustration.
