Abstract
Dystonia musculorum deformans (torsion dystonia) (DMD) is a severe, chronic, and usually progressive disease of the CNS. This disease was identified from the large group of hyperkinesias as an independent nosological entity by Schwalbe (1908), although 20 years earlier Gowers (1888) had described a disease with symptoms quite similar to DMD (Eldridge, 1970).
