Abstract

In the past, the so-called “extrapyramidal disorders” have been placed among the motor disturbances that are not articulated with the “pyramidal” corticospinal organization of the motor function (Wilson, 1912, 1914). More recently, it was demonstrated that the “extrapyramidal circuit” is organized, at least in part, starting and ending upon the cerebral cortex including the primary motor cortex (Alexander et al., 1986; Hoover and Strick, 1993). The basal ganglia would be at the base of this major subcortical loop through the thalamic relays of their output nuclei.
