Abstract
Widespread adoption of external cardiac compression and external electrical defibrillation necessitated electrocardiographic differentiation between asystole and ventricular fibrillation. Use of the electrocardiograph attracted the attention of cardiologists, and many be-came instant experts in cardiopulmonary resuscitation without appreciation of the basic physiologic differences between cardiac arrest and other forms of cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
