Abstract
Investigation of human embryogenesis has been almost totally limited to histological description. In view of the increased use of in vitro fertilization and cultivation of embryos for treatment of infertility (Steptoe and Edwards, 1978) and the largely unknown origins of many human birth defects, experimental approaches to understanding early human development are urgently required.
