Abstract
Knowing the patient and his family in illness and health, the family physician develops a patient/family profile that assists him in interpreting symptoms, intervening to promote health, and predicting the further course of individual and family function. The patient/family profile is the sum of the physician’s knowledge of the patient and his family. It is data that the physician uses as background in evaluating the patient’s complaints and problems, developing a comprehensive problem list, and devising treatment and management strategies. It is “knowing the patient and the family.”
