Summary

State mental health and mental retardation systems are analyzed regarding their current service programs for the elderly. A review of state hospital and community mental health/mental retardation centers reveals how they are performing in light of state-of-the-art programs. Problems that must be overcome to meet needs projected for the next 20 years are presented. A model of a state system to deliver care to the geriatric population of the future is set forth as a basis for planning new programs.
