Part of the book series: Lecture Notes on Coastal and Estuarine Studies ((COASTAL,volume 14))

Abstract

This paper reviews the literature concerning rheological properties of cohesive suspensions in terms of their physico-chemical environment. Experimental rheology of well-characterized suspensions of Na-kaolinite and Na-montmorillonite is emphasized and the influence of variables such as solids concentration, pH and ionic strength on the flow behavior of these suspensions is mainly examined through their effect on the extrapolated shear stress, τB· From a theoretical viewpoint, particular attention is given to determining interaction energies for model clay platelets representative of the particles in these suspensions, and to the relationship between particle interactions and rheological parameters.
