Abstract

A large number of bioactive compounds have been discovered among the metabolites of microorganisms. Researchers have revealed the mechanism of action of several that have practical use, as well as of some that are merely interesting. Most compounds were found to be specific inhibitors of certain enzymes or enzyme systems. Such enzymes or enzyme systems provide targets for selective cytotoxicity or for pharmacological intervention.
