Abstract
The gastrointestinal (GI) system consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum and associated organs and glands (ie, salivary glands, exocrine pancreas, and liver). Its overall function is to obtain nutrients from the external environment. With the exception of oxygen, all required nutrients are obtained through the GI system.
