Abstract
Disease: Skin warts, anogenital warts (condyloma acuminatum, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, bowenoid papulosis), oral and laryngeal papillomas, conjunctival papillo-mas, focal epithelial hyperplasia Heck; anogenital cancer, laryngeal carcinomas, tongue carcinomas, skin carcinomas of patients with epidermodysplasia verruci-formis.
Etiologic Agents: Human papillomavirus genotypes 1 to 46.
Source: Man by direct contact.
Clinical Manifestations: Circumscribed benign tumors of skin and mucosa, which frequently regress spontaneously. Specific lesions may progress to cancer. Subclinical infections frequent.
Pathology: Epithelial tumors, showing acanthosis and variable degrees of papillomatosis and hyperkeratosis.
Laboratory Diagnosis: Demonstration of virus particles in the electron microscope and, more convenient, of virus capsid antigen by means of a genus-specific antiserum in a PAP test. Identification and typing of viral DNA by nucleic acid hybridization.
Epidemiology: Worldwide incidence at least 20% of the population. Some human papillomavirus types restricted to ethnic groups.
Treatment: Surgical therapy (excision, curettage, laser), application of caustic agents, cryotherapy, interferon.
Prevention and Control: Disinfection, prevention of sexual transmission. No vaccine available yet.
