Abstract

The adelgids of the superfamily Aphidoidea are all cortical parenchyma feeders on conifers. Their very long and slender mouthparts (stylets) penetrate intercellularly and leave multibranched salivary tracks in the plant tissues. Most have a pentamorphic life cycle, which takes two years to complete, and involves two different host plants (Gaumont 1957, Carter 1971). Galls are produced only on their primary host which is always a spruce,Picea spp. (Fig. 1, 2).
