Part of the book series: Current Topics in Medical Mycology ((CT MYCOLOGY,volume 2))

Abstract

Approximately 5% of all hospitalized patients develop a nosocomial infection. The costs associated with such infections are estimated to be more than 1 billion dollars per year. Although bacteria are the most common etiologic agents in hospital-acquired infections, fungi are also significant nosocomial pathogens.
