Abstract
The salient characteristics of the computer, its enormous capacity and speed to store, access, and process data, has made it an indispensable tool to urban planners who deal with various information for their problem solving tasks. In urban planning, however, the role of the computer has been less significant than in other disciplines, such as business and engineering. As one possible explanation, Dueker (1982) cites that the distinctive nature of data used in urban planning—public goods and services—is that they are indivisible and therefore more difficult to describe discretely for computer processing.
