Abstract
Eighty years ago Lord Kelvin1 presented an interesting paper on the effect of the mode of suspension on the rate of a clock or chronometer. This paper reported on, and gave the correct machanical interpretation of, the effects observed. The problem constitutes an interesting example of the theory of coupled oscillations, which readily lends itself to use in a junior course in mechanics as a laboratory experiment. For that reason it seemed to us that a modern presentation of the subject might be of interest.
