Abstract
Hallucinations are false perceptions—sensory experiences that are generated in the absence of an adequate stimulus. They occur in all the basic sensory modalities: visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, and olfactory. The diversity of contexts in which they arise—toxic states, metabolic disorders, schizophrenic episodes, epilepsy, nocturnal dreaming, hypnosis—suggests that their elicitation must involve multiple mechanisms.
