Abstract

The CNS circuitry that mediates auditory perception is very complex and is not completely understood. As in other sensory systems, there are parallel circuits that convey information about different features of the auditory environment (the axons that represent particular frequencies and the circuitry that is involved in sound location, for example), and a hierarchical organization so that information is conveyed from one synaptic station to the next in a sequence. Also, there are a large number of feedback pathways, so information flow along the central auditory circuits is gated by descending inputs. For the most part, these feedback pathways are not well understood and are mentioned only in passing.
