Abstract
Writing about the departed is a far less thorny proposition than dealing with the living. This is especially true when one’s subject has been variously mentor, colleague, collaborator, boss, father confessor, and just plain friend. Was such and such a comment confidential? What about letters? The difficulties are apparent. Nevertheless, against every instinct, I decided to set down something of my long, if lacunary, relationship with Paul Halmos.
