Abstract

Respiratory rehabilitation programs are widely accepted as important in the management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Although several studies have alluded to the benefits of rehabilitation only a few have been prospective, randomized or controlled. Table I summarizes the five examples of prospective randomized controlled trials of respiratory rehabilitation that we were able to find after conducting a search of the literature published in the last 20 years. When the various protocols are examined in detail their designs limit their generalizability and lead us to conclude that the evidence as to whether respiratory rehabilitation works remains equivocal.
