Abstract
The 1980s saw the widespread acceptance in Europe of the concept of limited mobility in the provision of telecommunication services. Markets for both analogue cellular radio and first generation (analogue) cordless telephones saw huge growth. Accompanying this was a similar growth in the availability, use and services offered by wide area paging systems. The decade also saw major progress in the development of common panEuropean standards for digital cordless telephony, digital cellular radio telephony and radio paging. These factors together formed the seedcorn for the emergent concept of “personal communications”.
